Gutter Types: Take Your Pick

Whether it’s brand new or needs a renovation, there are a lot of things to to consider before deciding some changes, or repairs for your home. Gutters are one of these. Gutters are one of the most important parts of the house that should be working properly. Neglecting this part will bring damage both to the house and your pocket.

If you’ve decided on purchasing one, these are the types of gutters that you can choose from depending on your budget, the build of your house, surroundings, and to your visual taste.

Galvanized Steel: An extremely popular choice for many due to its high durability. If you’re looking for strength, this is for you. It has strong resistance to weather and debris, making it last almost forever. However, not unless a special coating is applied, this type of gutter is vulnerable to rust and corrosion.

Aluminum: Affordable and lightweight, this can save a lot of money. Not as durable as galvanized steel gutters, but it still can withstand weather elements. Keep in mind though that this variety will also require frequent checks for any need of repairs.

Copper: If you want that “aged” look, this might be the answer. The natural shiny and gold look brings out good visual appeal that gives a classy look to your house. It never rusts, thus it is meant to last for years and can hold up to weather. One thing to take note with copper gutters is that it oxidizes through time so the color changes to a brown or greenish tint, unless sealants are applied. Prepare your pockets with this one.

Vinyl: An inexpensive type and a favorite of DIY people. Vinyl gutters are easy to install, light and fairly durable. It’s easy to cut and put holes in it in terms of installing downspouts. It doesn’t require regular maintenance, but like any other type of gutters, it also needs to be checked for any clogs. Due to the composition of the material, it’s not susceptible to rot and rust and compared to the other types, vinyls won’t chip nor dent. When deciding to purchase one, take into consideration the weather conditions in your area. Vinyls are durable but can suffer from extremely hot or cold weather. It does expand, but it cracks in extreme cold.

Those are the popular types of gutters. Always consider the surroundings of your house, the weather conditions and especially the damage you can take for your pocket. Investing on a gutter system isn’t a waste of money, but a big money saver because of the house repairs you’ll be preventing to have.
